As my wonderful husband’s birthday is coming up, I wanted to surprise him with a Manchester United-theme present.
It’s not his birthday yet, but I’ll eat my big furry hat if he sees this post before then (shhh, it’s our secret, Pat!).
Okay okay, so it’s not technically a drawing – more like a photo montage – but it did take me a lot of time and a little bit of illustrative skill, so I’m adding it to the 1000 drawing count.
In case this means absolutely nothing to you, allow me to elaborate! I based the design on an existing Bruce Lee movie poster. I modified it a fair bit, and added Eric Cantona’s head (and left it obviously a fake photo manipulation, to add to the comedy value).
This is all a reference to Eric Cantona’s famous “kung fu kick”, where in 1995 while playing for Manchester United, he lunged feet first at a Crystal Palace fan who had been shouting racist abuse at him.
He subsequently appeared in a press conference, while the FA were deliberating on how he should be reprimanded, and where he casually gave his epic “Seagull” speech.
Well, maybe not quite a speech, more like a sentence:
“When the seagulls (long dramatic pause to drink some water) follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you.”
…And then walked out.
We are big Cantona fans in our house. Both as United supporters, and with me being French (and from Provence too, like him).
Oo ah, Cantona!!
